Introduction

In Esperanto there is only one article: la.

Example

Sinjorino Veturema estas komercistino. La komercistino multe veturas kaj parolas la anglan, la germanan kaj Esperanton.

Momente ŝi estas en Eŭropo, en Germanio. Ŝi ĵus alvenis al Berlino kaj eniris hotelon. En la hotelo ŝi demandis ĉambron. En la ĉambro estas lito kaj ŝranketo el ligno. La ligno estas de bona kvalito.

Post elpaki la kofron, la laca sinjorino Veturema volas ripozi. Estis longa veturado.

Usage

We use la in a similar way to the in English. The following overview lists the most important usage of la, when to use the article and when to leave it out.

No Article

  • mentioned for the first time/identity is not important
    Example:
    Ŝi eniris hotelon.She went into a hotel.
    En la ĉambro estas lito kaj ŝranketo el ligno.In the room, there is a a bed and a little cupboard made of wood.

    Mentioned for the first time – not a specific hotel, bed or cupboard.

  • something indefinite
    Example:
    Estis longa veturado.It was a long journey.
  • before names/proper nouns
    Example:
    Sinjorino Veturema estas komercistino.Ms Veturema is a business woman.
  • before countries/states, cities/towns and continents
    Example:
    Momente ŝi estas en Eŭropo, en Germanio. Ŝi ĵus alvenis al Berlino.At the moment she is in Europe, in Germany. She has just arrived in Berlin.
  • before job titles
    Example:
    Sinjorino Veturema estas komercistino.Ms Veturema is a business woman.
  • before Esperanto
    Example:
    La komercistino multe veturas kaj parolas la anglan, la germanan kaj Esperanton.The business woman travels a lot and speaks English, German and Esperanto.
  • with the names of materials
    Example:
    En la ĉambro estas lito kaj ŝranketo el ligno.In the room, there is a bed and a little cupboard made of wood.

Article

  • previously mentioned/already known
    Example:
    En la hotelo ŝi demandas ĉambron.In the hotel, she asked for a room.
    En la ĉambro estas lito kaj ŝranketo el ligno.In the room, there is a bed and a little cupboard made of wood.

    The hotel and the room have already been mentioned.

  • before something definite/specific
    Example:
    La veturado lacigis Sinjorinon Veturema.The long journey made Ms Veturema tired.
  • before names/proper nouns with adjectives
    Example:
    La laca sinjorino Veturema volas ripozi.The tired Ms Veturema would like to rest.
  • before planets, stars etc.
    Example:
    La tero estas ronda.The earth is round.
    La suno brilas hele.The sun shines brightly.
  • when describing a person by their job title
    Example:
    La komercistino multe veturas.The business woman travels a lot.
  • before every language (except for Esperanto)
    Example:
    Ŝi parolas la anglan, la germanan kaj Esperanton.She speaks English, German and Esperanto.
  • with the material of a particular object/for a specific purpose
    Example:
    La ligno de la lito estas de bona kvalito.The wood of the bed is of good quality.
  • when saying the time
    Example:
    La kioma horo estas? Estas la kvina kaj duono.What time is it? It’s half past five.
  • with possessive pronouns
    Example:
    La kofro estas la ŝia.The suitcase is hers.
