Types of Adverbs
Introduction
Adverbs are split into different groups depending on whether they describe place, time, reason or manner.
Example
Hieraŭ mi estis en koncerto kun miaj amikoj. Antonio kaj mi venis malfrue. Tial niaj amikoj ne atendis nin, kie ni volis renkontiĝi. Kiam ni alvenis, niaj amikoj ĉiuj staris antaŭ la scenejo. Sed tie staris tro da homoj, tial Antonio kaj mi restis malantaŭe.
Kiam la koncerto komencis, la fanoj komencis krii. Ni apenaŭ komprenis ion, pro kio mi koleriĝis. Sed multaj de la spektantoj estis junulinoj, kiuj svenis jam dum la unua kanto. Tial baldaŭ estis malpli da personoj en la publiko kaj ni staris apud niaj amikoj.
Adverbs of Place
Adverbs of place describe the location where the action of a verb takes place.
- Example:
- Kiam ni alvenis, niaj amikoj ĉiuj staris antaŭ la scenejo.When we arrived, our friends where all standing in front of the stage
- Sed tie staris tro da homoj, tial Antonio kaj mi restis malantaŭe.But there were too many people, so Antonio and stayed behind.

Adverbs of Time
Adverbs of time express the frequency of an action. They tell us how often something takes place.
- Example:
- Hieraŭ mi estis en koncerto kun miaj amikoj.Yesterday I was at a concert with my friend.
- Multaj junulinoj svenis jam dum la unua kanto.Many young girls already fainted during the first song.

Adverbs of Manner
Adverbs of manner describe the way an action is carried out.
- Example:
- Ni apenaŭ komprenis ion.We hardly understood anything.
Aside from adverbs derived from adjectives, adverbs of manner include:

Adverbs of Reason
Adverbs of reason describe the purpose of an action.
- Example:
- Tial niaj amikoj ne atendis nin.That’s why our friends weren’t waiting for us.
- Sekve baldaŭ ni staris apud niaj amikoj.Consequently, we soon stood beside our friends.
Adverbs of reason include:

Relative Adverbs
We use relative adverbs in relative clauses.
- Example:
- Niaj amikoj ne atendis nin, kie ni volis renkontiĝi.Our friens are not waiting for us where we wanted to meet.
- Ni apenaŭ komprenis ion, pro kio mi koleriĝis.We hardly understood anything which angered me.
