Reflexive Verbs

Introduction

A reflexive verb shows that a person does something to/for himself or herself (example: enjoy oneself).

Example

En Esperanto-renkontiĝo Oleg renkontas alian knabon. Li alparolas lin kaj prezentas sin. La alia knabo nomiĝas Pedro.

Oleg interesiĝas pri la hobioj de Pedro. Ili amuziĝas multege.

Usage

We use reflexive verbs when the subject and object are the same person/thing/etc.

Example:
Oleg multege amuziĝas/amuzas sin.Oleg amuses himself greatly.

Subject/Object: Oleg

We don’t use a reflexive verb when the subject and object are not the same.

Example:
Mia ŝerco amuzis lin.My joke amused him.

Subject: mia ŝerco; Object: Oleg

Construction

There are two ways to construct reflexive verbs in Esperanto:

  • We put the reflexive pronoun before or after the verb. This construction is common for actions that are carried out deliberately.
Example:
Oleg sin prezentas./Oleg prezentas sin.Oleg introduces himself.
  • We put the syllable -iĝ- before the verb ending. This contruction is used for states and conditions i.e. for actions that are not deilberatly/actively carried out by someone.
Example:
La alia knabo nomas Pedro. The other boy is called Pedro. (literally: calls himself …)
