Negation

Introduction

The simple form of negation in Esperanto is made with the word ne.

Example

La knabo venas de Ĉinio, sed la knabino ne estas de Ĉinio, ŝi venas de Brazilo.

La knabino parolas la portugalan kaj la francan. La knabo parolas nek la portugalan nek la francan, sed la ĉinan kaj la anglan.

Ili silentas, ĉar neniu scipovas paroli la lingvojn de la alia kaj ili ne havas vortaron.

Using ne

The word ne means no/not.

Example:
Ĉu vi parolas la ĉinan? – Ne, mi ne parolas la ĉinan.Do you speak Chinese? – No, I don’t speak Chinese.
Ĉu vi havas vortaron? – Ne, mi ne havas vortaron.Do you have a dictionary? – No, I don’t have a dictionary.

Ne always come before the word we want to negate.

Example:
La knabino ne venas el Ĉinio.The girl doesn’t come from China.
Ili ne havas vortaron.They don’t have a dictionary.
Ne la knabino parolas la anglan, sed la knabo.The girl doesn’t speak English, but the boy (does).

Negative sentences without ne

We can also make negative sentences with nek … nek or the forms of neni-. Just like in English, we cannot form double negatives which means that ne is not used in these types of sentences.

Example:
Mi konas nek lin nek ŝin.I know neither him nor her.
(not: Mi ne konas nek lin nek ŝin.)
Vi nenion scias.You know nothing.
(not: Vi nenion ne scias.)

Using nek … nek

Nek … nek means neither … nor.

Example:
Mi konas nek lin nek ŝin.I know neither him nor her.
La knabo parolas nek la portugalan nek la francan, sed la ĉinan kaj la anglan.The boy speaks neither Portugese nor French, but Chinese and English.

Sentences with neni-

Sentences that use the correlative words beginning with neni- are also a kind of negation.

Example:
Ili silentas, ĉar neniu scipovas paroli la lingvojn de la alia.They remain silent, because nobody can speak the other one's languages.

nenies no one’s/not anyones’s Tio estas nenies proprietaĵo.That isn’t anybody’s property.

Accusative and Plural

Be aware that nenio, neniu, nenia can take the accusative -n ending, neniu and nenia can also be plural.

Example:
Neniu konas min.Nobody knows me.
Mi neniun konas.I don’t know anybody.
Estos neniaj problemoj.There won’t be any problems.
