Closed Questions (Yes/No)
- Example:
- Ĉu vi ŝatas glaciaĵon?
Open Questions
Open questions give more information. They ask after more specific information like for example a subject, object, place or time. Question words are the k-words.
- Example:
- Kiu volas manĝi glaciaĵon?Who wants to eat ice-cream?
- Kia glaciaĵo plaĉas al vi?Which ice-cream do you like?
- Kiom da glaciaĵoj vi manĝas?How much ice-cream do you eat?
- Kie ni povas aĉeti glaciaĵon?Where can we buy ice-cream?
- Kiam vi manĝas pli da glaciaĵoj – ĉu en vintro aŭ en somero? When do you eat more ice-cream – in winter or summer?
Indirect Questions
Indirect questions are questions that are contained within another sentence. They complete some specific expressions.
- Example:
- Mi ne scias, …I don’t know, …
- Li demandas, …He asks, …
- Mi ne komprenas, …I don’t understand, …
- Ŝi volas scii, …They would like to know, …
- Mi ne diros al vi, …I won’t tell you, …
- Ĉu vi povas diri al mi,…Can you tell me, …?
The word order of indirect questions is the same as in normal questions.
- Example:
- Ŝi demandas, ĉu vi ŝatas glaciaĵon.She is asking if you like ice-cream.
- Mi ne scias, kie ni povas aĉeti glaciaĵon.I don’t know where we can buy ice-cream.
Sentences with indirect questions usually end with a full stop (not a question mark). We only use a questions mark when the indirect question is part of a real question.
- Example:
- Ĉu vi povas diri al ni, kie ni povas aĉeti glaciaĵon?Can you tell us where we can buy ice-cream?
