Sentences with Conjunctions

Introduction

Conjunctions and subjunctions connect parts of sentences.

Example

Kristina estas feliĉa, ĉar ŝi havas feriojn.

Ŝi ŝatas la maron kaj ĉiujare ŝi restas kelkajn semanojn en malgranda urbo ĉe la maro.

Ŝi volas vidi la sunsubiron, tial ŝi venis al la plaĝo.

Conjunctions and Subjunctions

Conjunctions connect two main clauses with each other. Common conjunctions are kajand, aŭor, sedbut.

Example:: Ŝi ŝatas la maron kaj ĉiujare ŝi restas kelkajn semanojn en malgranda urbo ĉe la maro.She loves the sea and spends a few weeks in a small town near the sea every year.

Subjunctions introduce dependent clauses that express a reason, a condition, an aim or result, a time or a contradiction (see following overview). Subjunctions include ĉarbecause, tialso, therefore, kiamas, when.

Example:: Kristina estas feliĉa, ĉar ŝi havas feriojn.Kristina is happy because she is on holiday.; Ŝi volas vidi la sunsubiron, tial ŝi venis al la plaĝo.She wants to see the sunset so she came to the beach.

Subjunctions and Volitive Mood

Por ke is always followed by the volitive mood. With the volitive mood we express what is to be done.

Example:: Ŝi venis al la plaĝo, por ke ŝi povu vidi la sunsubiron.She came to the beach so that she could see the sunset.

After specific expressions plus kiam, ĉu and ke, the volitive mood can be used in the same way.

Example:: Kristina ne estis certe, kiam/ĉu la suno subiru super la maro.Kristina wasn’t sure, what time/if the sun would set over the sea.; Ŝi deziris, ke la suno subiru super la maro.She wished that the sun would set over the sea.
